National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases

Senior Mathematical Statistician, Biostatistics Research Branch, Division of Clinical Research

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), one of the largest Institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is seeking an exceptional and motivated scientist to serve as a senior mathematical statistician in the Biostatistics Research Branch (BRB), Division of Clinical Research (DCR). BRB serves as the leading authoritative resource for all biostatistical and quantitative needs of the Institute and provides statistical direction and leadership on the design, review, conduct, data collection, and analyses of biomedical experiments and national and international clinical trials. The senior mathematical statistician is fully integrated into all stages of basic, translational, and clinical research and plays a fundamental role in the formulation, design, monitoring, and analysis of studies; ensuring and safeguarding scientific integrity; promoting statistical rigor; and maximizing the likelihood that the research produces valid, highly informative, and reproducible data. The position is a vital member of the scientific research team and is responsible for leading, managing, and directing high-priority projects that advance NIAID’s clinical research priorities working with and in support of intramural and extramural scientists, researchers, and clinicians. The senior mathematical statistician serves as an expert advisor and senior collaborator in the development and implementation of complex statistical theories and concepts and designs and develops original research techniques and methodologies to address statistical problems in large, complex national and international biomedical research studies.

Key responsibilities of the position include oversight and direction in the areas of study design and conduct, clinical monitoring, data management, complex analyses, and reporting of intramural clinical trials and observational studies for emerging/reemerging infectious diseases; advising on the optimum use of statistical methods and techniques for rapidly responding to public health emergencies, such as SARS-CoV-2, Ebola, Tuberculosis, Influenza, and HIV/AIDS; serving on and in support of data and safety monitoring boards and as a statistical reviewer on clinical and scientific committees for NIAID intramural and extramural programs; and providing definitive statistical advice and consultation based on an extensive knowledge and mastery of adaptive methods in clinical trials and expertise in multiple scientific disciplines.

If you are ready for an exciting opportunity, please see the detailed job announcement at Scientific Careers at NIH for more information about the position and how to apply.

HHS, NIH, and NIAID are equal opportunity employers dedicated to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
